Late Nights at Roxy’s in Cape Town

Drinks at Roxy’s after work? Roxy’s has become the regular meeting place with friends – for a cup of coffee, a beer and a game of pool.

My parents used to meet at this little joint almost 30 years ago when it was a speciality coffee house with sweet jazz music. It’s funny how things change through ages. They used to live in Tamboerskloof, wander through Company Gardens and grab a sneaky late night movie at The Labia. Who would have thought thirty years later I would be doing the same?

Roxy’s is fit for any time of day. It is settled in Dunkley Square, Gardens, and prides itself as a day- and night-time lounge. They do lovely breakfasts with a Deluxe blend of coffee beans that is strong enough to kick you in the teeth. It is also a great afternoon lunch venue. The post-meridian sun tickles the benches outside in just the right way for friends to enjoy a fresh bottle of beer.

Whether you have a caffeine or barley craving, Roxy’s will satisfy.

Fancy a White Russian? Roxy's got it all.

In the evenings this Bohemian cafe has a seductive drinks special. My friends and I often head to Roxy’s before 6 pm to enjoy their drinks special: a bucket of six beers for only R60. Note: on Monday’s you can also order one kilogram of chicken wings for R99. This celebration often spills into a pool game and a nachos snack. Otherwise, if you’re really hungry, there is an ostrich burger with a side of chips that don’t skimp. It could be a meal for two!

One thing is for sure: it never attracts dull people.

“These socks are ‘dope’, get it?” a friend exclaimed at Roxy’s.

Late night’s at Roxy’s is also a treat. The trees in the courtyard light up with fairy lights and a buzz hangs in the air. People laugh, shriek, clink bottles and curse into the Cape Town night sky. It is one of Cape Town’s few hot spots that boasts a late night kitchen (and coffee).  There is even a two for one beer special from 12 am until closing time. These shenanigans can continue into 2 am in the morning.
