I have been hunting for a coffee shop that is open on the weekends. More often than not, I do not have time during the weekdays to explore new coffee corners. To my surprise, most of the coffee shops in Cape Town are either closed or closing early on weekends. This weekend I was determined to find a place that would cater to my late Saturday caffeine cravings.
And I found it.
Perched on the corner of Picadilly Square at the end of Regent Square in Sea Point, is Mischu coffee shop. It is quite unobtrusive from the outside. I sort of stumbled into the cafe, surprised by the spacious interior.

Dean was my companion for the day. We selected the large table near the entrance and turned to the coffee bar to order. By the looks of things, this was strictly a coffee shop. There were a few bite size nibbles on display, but everything about the space yelled COFFEE.
And better yet – it stays open until 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
This coffee shop is tucked away in a quiet corner in town, it almost feels like a secret. I had never heard about it until a Google search revealed its existence to me today. Mischu opened its doors in 2012 and has been doing well ever since.
As I let my eye slide along the welcome interior, I could see why. The menu behind the baristas boasted the title “Best Coffee Shop in Cape Town 2015 and 2016”. On the shelf was also a collection of trophies to proudly back up their title. Mischu’s cappuccino has even been rated the Best in South Africa.

The coffee is well priced and unpretentious. I sat back and sipped a simple latte, which tasted divine. It was smooth and rich, not too bitter.

The ‘regular’ latte; and this is the smallest size for only R25.

Some pretty latte art at Mischu coffee shop.
As I was busy taking photos of my coffee cup, as every Instagrammer does, two customers yelled out:
“This is the best coffee I ever had!”
It definitely came pretty close for me.
The coffee shop is also something different. It is the idea working space outside of the office. Which is what everyone else seemed to be using it for. It’s spacious, quiet and supplies wi-fi to fuel your computer, and coffee to fuel you.
And I must say, the natural lighting is amazing. It almost has a quiet, soft atmosphere that nurtures the ideal working conditions.
“I better remember this place for the future,” Dean said.

It’s an ideal workspace in Mischu coffee showroom.

The large coffee cups – how cute is the design?
It also seemed to be a space for some chatty customers. Some showed interest when they saw my camera flash. A few of them were curious enough to strike up a conversation – something that does not happen often in Cape Town.
I have definitely marked this place down on my list of top work spaces. And it doesn’t hurt that is just up the road from the scenic Sea Point Promenade.
